We would love you to understand an olive tree as a whole, before you start reaping benefits. The story of olive goes back to pre-historic times that may be interesting to know more about. It has mythological roots to boast of. Yes… it has been a treasure of nature since forever. Here we have put together a brief history of the most exotic blessing of nature – Going Back in Time, the Bible says: But I am like green olive tree in the house of God, I trust in the mercy of God for ever and ever. Psalms 52:8 History registers olive being called heavenly tree, being a potion of immortality. Also known as the ‘tree of eternity’, olive has a noble and beloved history behind its legendary reputation.
Originated in what is now Turkey, the cultivation of olive trees dates back to 7000 years in the Mediterranean regions. Since the beginning of civilisation in this region, olive has been a part of everyday life. It is believed that the tree of eternity has contributed to the rise and power of the ancient Greek and Roman empires. According to Greek mythology, olive tree was brought into existence by the Goddess Athena, who won a contest with Poseidon, God of Sea. The prize was the patronage of a great city and would be won by whoever presented the city with the best gift. Poseidon struck the ground with his mighty trident and created a sea which, although impressive, was too salty to drink.
Athena knelt and planted something in the ground which grew into an olive tree. This turned out to be a much more useful gift than just a tree. Trees are many, but the likes of neem, olive, tulsi, white pine, etc., are rare. This gift produced not only food but medicinal potions, oil for lighting and wood for heating and building too. Athena won the contest and, consequently, the great city was named in her honour – Athens. Even today, an olive tree stands where this legendary contest took place, and it is said that all the olive trees in Athens are descended from the olive tree grown by Athena.
